Building a cleaner future with sustainable timber

Sustainability at Woodhouse Sawmill

We prioritise sustainability in our processes and adopt a zero-waste policy meaning that everything that come into the sawmill leaves as a product or resource.

Sourcing Responsibly

We only purchase round wood from suppliers that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified.

FSC is a global not-for-profit organisation promoting responsible forest management.  Their standards are developed at a global level and adapted to each country’s national standards.

PEFC is the largest forest certification system in the world, meeting the requirements of small family forest owners. PEFC certification endorses national forest certification systems which have been developed with a multiple stakeholder approach and is recognised in 36 countries.

Zero Waste

Sustainability goes beyond forestry management. We take responsibility for using all of the timber that gets delivered to the sawmill. If round wood doesn’t meet our high standards we process the timber and sell firewood locally as well as online.

The offcuts from the sawmill are chipped on-site and either used in our biomass boilers or sold to the public. The sawdust is treated as a by-product rather than waste. It is ideal for use as animal bedding or can be compressed to make wood pellets. You can purchase firewood and woodchip from our sister company Woodhouse fuels.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

As well as ensuring the materials we use aren’t impacting the environment negatively, we make sure the way we manufacture the products we sell is environmentally friendly.

Our sawmill is powered by electricity which is generated onsite using our solar PV array. Drying kilns receive heat from our biomass plant. The biomass boilers produce an intense, dry heat which force dries timber very efficiently
